Pre-Vatican II in my early days of Catechism (1950’s) it was (sort of) a venial sin to read the Bible, certainly, on your own. I think (particularly in regard to the Old Testament) what they were saying is that The Church will “interpret” the Bible for you. I recall parts of the Mass (like, the Epistle) were a discussion of Bible passages, massaged for you to get the real true Catholic message out of it. We never heard of a nun strumming a guitar up on the altar back then. That was for Baptists. That’s just the way it was. We didn’t know what some Pope in the distant past did or said what.
