I did not know the Stratfordian die-hards were Jewish or Jewish-influenced, or that they compare skepticism about the official line to Holocaust™ denial. Whether Jewish or conformist academics, though, that’s an apt analogy for their mentality. They’d probably put Doubters in jail if they could.

Even we anti-Stratfordians find it hard to convince one another of a particular view. Facts are thin on the ground and all theories of the Shakespeare authorship include a generous helping of speculation. We can but try to find the most convincing.

One interesting idea I ran across recently — sorry, I can’t remember where — is that the anonymous author passed his work on to the actor/manager of the troupe who put on the plays. We actually know nothing about his identity except that he went under, presumably, the nom de plume Shakespeare. As far as I know there is nothing to connect the guy at the Globe theater with the man from Stratford, other than the traditional academic narrative.

The theory continues: Shakespeare and productions of the plays became popular, even trendy, in the 18th century. Audiences needed a backstory for this man who was now a part of the culture of their own time as well as of the national heritage. Yet no one knew anything about his life! That would not do for a shining star of English letters.

Then, as if an answered prayer, someone discovered a rather obscure bloke who had lived in Stratford-upon-Avon at the time the plays were acted and eventually published. Shakespeare promoters found a way to fill the need.

I don’t know if this interpretation is correct, though to my non-expert amateur understanding it fits as well as any other theory the very limited data we can say we know for sure.

Highly likely that the Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch merchants in London were heavily crypto Jewish. They’d have been in the Southwark.

Two objections.

(1) The academic drudges who assure us Shakespeare ran a theater company and tossed off plays and sonnets in his spare moments have never worked in a performing arts company (as I have, incidentally) and do not know how time-consuming such a position is for a manager.

(2) Jules Verne must have served on a submarine and visited the moon, or he could not have written Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and From the Earth to the Moon.

A brilliant and skilled man like Edward de Vere could have learned stagecraft second-hand. He may have had connections with the world of theater. It’s also possible the actor/manager “Shakespeare” did some editing of the plays supplied by the real author to make them more suitable for performance.

What matters—and I shall be surprised if you and I have any genuine disagreement on this—is not and was never the loan shark population of Venice or of other important trading sites along the sides of the Boot. Rather, what matter are the myriad tiny details of life in contemporary Venice, details in which the play abounds and that only a native or an attentive visitor would ever have known.

Not coincidentally, this is something that Joseph Sobran frequently adverts to in Alias Shakespeare to reinforce his authorship arguments pro Oxford and contra Shaksper of Stratford. Both Joe and I subsequently discovered a wonderful book, The Shakespeare Guide to Italy, by Richard Paul Roe (d. 2010), that brilliantly combines travelogue, detective work, and literary analysis to demonstrate, as Mark Rylance wrote, that “anyone who claims to have written the plays of Shakespeare needs to show some Italian travel documents.” I commend the book to your attention.

He was very fond of quoting a sentence written by John Murray Cuddihy: “All stereotypes are more or less accurate.” Indeed, he was so fond of the quote that it is one of nine* screened on the coffee mug once offered to subscribers to his newsletter, The Real News of the Month, published by his loyal friend and benefactress Fran Griffin.

With due respect to Bram Stoker — Dracula is quite an achievement and second to none in its creepy genre — it’s not exactly on a par with Shakespeare’s works.

But I agree with your point, which I also tried to make contra Germ Theory (“worked in the theater as a professional. Necessary? Absolutely: a sine qua non. Did either deVere or North do this? No they did not”).

Keen empathy, sharp perception, and imagination can sometimes enable a writer to convincingly recreate things foreign to his own experience. For instance, Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage has often been credited as being a profoundly realistic account of fighting in the War Between the States. Crane wasn’t even born when the war took place and was never a soldier.

Granted it’s not quite the same thing, but I have no trouble believing that an aristocrat with a wide circle of acquaintances could have picked up pointers about writing drama without actually being on stage or running a theater company. In fact I can’t think of any major playwright who also had a career as an actor or actor-manager.

It doesn’t do to claim certainty about the Shakespeare authorship issue. There is an extreme shortage of validated clues, and we see through a glass darkly. Maybe the orthodox academics are right in ascribing immortality to the man from Stratford about whom we know vanishingly little. I think it’s unlikely, but maybe. For me, anyway, it’s a field where playing detective is fascinating.

Were they? The standard dating, proposed by Edmond Malone in the late eighteenth century, has undergone remarkably little revision in the past 250 years. There is, however, no hard documentary evidence supporting a date of completion or performance for any of the ten plays conventionally dated after 1604. None of these ten plays have quarto editions of any reliability, and some of them make their very first appearance in the First Folio (1623), where a very great deal besides dates is neck-deep in dubiety.

Both Sobran and Ogburn show that the standard dating has been done on the basis of circular reasoning: i.e., since Shaksper of Stratford must have been Shakespeare, these plays, with their characteristic “late” style, couldn’t possibly have been written ten or fifteen years earlier. In short, the standard dating begs the question.

There is another approach one can take, however: viz., to explore whether there is internal evidence in the plays; evidence related to sources; evidence connected with dedications, with datable contemporary comments, or with correspondence; or the like that renders impossible the author of even one of those ten plays being Oxford, North, or another candidate.

Sobran takes precisely this approach in chapter 6 of Alias Shakespeare: “1604: The Crucial Year.” Among other things, he shows that, of the sources of Shakespeare’s plays that have been established with genuine confidence rather than conjecture—e.g., Chaucer, Holinshed, Plutarch—all were published well prior to 1603. Moreover, he cites several well-attested post-1604 and pre-1616 documents, some of which have been studiously ignored by Stratfordian scholars, which consist of tributes to or comments about Shakespeare that are worded in such a way as to suggest that the poet is already dead.

There is a lot more in the chapter than is present in the comments above, needless to say. If I knew of some way to scan and upload the chapter without endangering my computer’s security and hence my own, I’d do it—but I don’t. I’ve tried, however, at least to indicate that there are far fewer certainties embedded in the “mainstream” position than its exponents claim there are.

I’m making my argument not from research (which I don’t do, hire a grad student) but from Shakespeare’s texts themselves, which show plainly the early influence of Marlowe (Henry VI, parts 1,2, and 3) and his early bumbling attempts at comedy (The Comedy of Errors), which demonstrates that he was in the game as a pro, to make money. All throughout Shakespeare are little inside jokes and asides which indicate a working knowledge of the theater. The way he deploys the role of a Clown or Fool strongly suggests that he knew Will Kemp and Robert Armin, the actors who played those roles. The way that scenes are constructed and contrasted shows a practical professional’s knowledge of stagecraft. Takes one to know one, I suppose.

We have de Vere’s poetry under his own name. To say it is without interest is to be charitable: it is competent, defensibly literate court poetry, of a type and style that many a courtier dabbled in. It is conventional, glib, naive, amateurish, and devoid of irony or complexity. And that is his admitted stuff. Come on.

Shakespeare did not only coin new words.
You don’t even have to be a very serious student of Shakespeare’s work but only familiar with linguistics to know that he is credited with the introduction of a new grammatical method of creating new words: functional shift or conversion.
It is a technique whereby a noun, without any morphological change, shifts its function to be used as verb, e.g., to father, to eye. It is not encountered in the writings of his contemporaries, yet he used it so often as to make it a characteristic part of his style, widely adopted and soon to become a key element of the richness of the English language.
That is simply genius unhampered by “little Latin and less Greek” and free from the constraints of learned, pedantic rules, so let’s stop DeVeresing him.
